Northern Cyprus

Explore the delightful towns and villages of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Visit the famous Lefkoşa (Nicosia) , the last divided capital in the world, make a historical tour of the walled city of Mağusa (Famagusta) and see the ruins of Salamis.  Visit the exquisite St. Barnabas Monastery and stop for a drink in the beautiful harbour in Girne (Kyrenia).  Explore the beautiful area of Bellapais and climb to the top of St. Hilarion for the spectacular viewpoint.

DAY 1

Arrival into Cyprus airport in the morning where we will pick you up from the airport. Our first stop is at the castle of St Hilarion, located on the beautiful Kyrenia mountain range.  The climb up can be a little tiring for some however, once there the view is most definitely worth it. The St
Hilarion castle was built as a Monastery and was named after a monk dated in the 10th century. Later the Byzantines turned it into a castle as a protection against Arab pirates.

Back on the road we continue to the Bellapais area, a quaint and cosy area with small narrow streets and an amazing view. Here we visit Bellapais Monastery before we have lunch in a local restaurant.

After lunch we will drive to our hotel in Girne for a rest and refresh. In the early evening we take a visit to the town centre where you will see the Girne castle and the beautiful harbour.  We dine in one of the local restaurants taking in the local ambience.

DAY 2

After breakfast we have a full day tour to Salamis, St. Barnabas Monastery and Mağusa (Famagusta). We start the day in St Barnabas Monastery which was built to commemorate St Barnabas, the most important saint of Cyprus, who was born in the ancient city of Salamis. The Monastery was originally built in the 5th century, it’s fascinating to see some parts of the original building that can still be seen in the church, built in 1756.

We continue to the ancient city of Salamis where we will visit the baths, the theatre and the gymnasium, which historically was the most powerful city in Cyprus.

Our next stop will be to see Magusa town centre where we have lunch in one of the local restaurants before the city walk to see the tower of Othello, the Citadel, the great Cathedral of St Nicholas since 1571 Lale Mustafa Pasha mosque, the prison of the famous Turkish writer Namik Kemal and many more interesting places along the way.
After our tour through these sites you will get free time before we drive to the famous ghost city of Famagusta.  Before the war in 1974 this area was the most important touristic area on the Island with beautiful beaches and hotels.  For the last 45 years the area has been left completely empty and today it is known as the ghost town.

Returning to our hotel in Girne for the evening. Free time and dinner.

DAY 3

Checking out of the hotel after breakfast we will drive to Lefkoşa where we will spend the whole day in this fascinating divided capital. We start the day with a guided walk to see all the sights on the Turkish side before we visit one of the small local restaurants for lunch, where after you will have free time to explore the city.  Depending on your nationality you may cross the borderline and visit the contrasting Greek part of the city.
