Four Days Trip To The Northern Aegean Coast

The northern part of the Aegean coast in Turkey is a region that offers a rich diversity of natural, historical, and cultural attractions. It is home to some of the most ancient and fascinating civilizations, such as Troy, Pergamon, and Assos, as well as some of the most scenic and charming towns, such as Çanakkale, Ayvalık, and Bergama. Whether you are interested in exploring the legendary sites of the Trojan War, admiring the impressive monuments of the Hellenistic and Roman eras, or enjoying the Mediterranean lifestyle and cuisine, you will find something to suit your taste and curiosity in this region.

DAY 1

Arrival in İzmir, the third-largest city in Turkey and a cultural and historical hub. You can explore the city’s attractions, such as the Konak Square, the Clock Tower, the Kemeraltı Bazaar, the Agora and the Archaeological Museum. After lunch we drive to Urla, a district of İzmir, located on the Aegean coast. It is known for its historical and cultural heritage, its natural beauty, and its peaceful atmosphere. Urla has a long history that dates back to the ancient times, when it was called Klazomenai, one of the twelve Ionian cities. You can visit the archaeological site of Limantepe, where the remains of the ancient city are located, and see the oldest olive oil production facility in the world. You can also visit the House of the Virgin Mary, where some believe she spent her last years. Urla is also famous for its charming villages, such as Şirince, Bademler, and Çeşmealtı, where you can enjoy the authentic architecture, the local cuisine, and the fruit wines. We stay overnight in a small boutique hotel in Urla.

DAY 2

After breakfast we drive to Bergama, the ancient city of Pergamon, which was one of the most powerful and influential kingdoms in the Hellenistic and Roman times. You can visit the Acropolis, which has the ruins of the Altar of Zeus, the Temple of Trajan, the Library, and the Theatre. You can also visit the Asclepion, which was a famous healing center and a sanctuary dedicated to the god of medicine, Asclepius. After lunch we continue to Ayvalık, a coastal town that has a colorful and multicultural history. We will visit Cunda Island, which is connected to the mainland by a bridge, and see the old stone houses, the churches, the mosques, and the windmills. Ayvalık is the perfect place to sample the local cuisine, which is influenced by the Greek and the Ottoman cultures. We stay overnight in a small hotel in Ayvalık.

DAY 3

After breakfast we drive to Troy, one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. Here you have the chance to explore the ruins of the ancient city, which span nine different periods of history, from the Bronze Age to the Roman Empire. You can also see the remains of the walls, the temples, the theater, and visit the Troy Museum, which exhibits the artifacts and the models of the site. After lunch we continue to the ancient city of Assos, which was founded by the Greeks in the 7th century BC. You will never forget the view from the Temple of Athena, which overlooks the Aegean Sea. You can also enjoy the scenic views and the charming atmosphere of the village of Behramkale, which lies below the ruins. We stay overnight in a small hotel nearby Assos.

DAY 4

After breakfast we drive to Çanakkale, a city that straddles the Dardanelles Strait and has a rich history and culture. We will visit the Çanakkale Naval Museum, which displays the relics of the Gallipoli Campaign, a World War I battle that took place nearby and the Gallipoli area. You will also have free time to stroll around in this charming town before we leave you at the airport or bus station.
