DAY 1: Explore Chios Town and the Mastic Villages
We arrive from Çeşme early in the morning and start our day with a Greek breakfast at one of the cafés on the promenade of Chios Town, the capital and main port of the island. After breakfast we visit the Castle of Chios, a medieval fortress that dates back to the 10th century and houses the Byzantine Museum and the Ottoman Baths and wander through the narrow streets of the old town and admire the traditional architecture and the colorful doors and windows. You can also stop by the Korais Library, the Archaeological Museum, and the Maritime Museum of Oinousses.
Then we drive to the south of the island, where the famous mastic trees grow and produce the aromatic resin that is used for various products. We will visit some of the Mastic Villages (Mastichochoria), a group of 24 medieval settlements that have preserved their unique character and charm. Some of the most picturesque ones are Pyrgi, Mesta, Olympi, and Kalamoti. You can admire the geometric patterns on the walls of Pyrgi, the fortified layout of Mesta, the cave of Olympi, and the church of Agios Isidoros in Kalamoti.
In the evening we have a delicious seafood dinner at one of the taverns by the sea.
We stay overnight in a small boutique hotel.
DAY 2: Visit the Nea Moni Monastery and the Northern Villages
After breakfast we drive to the Nea Moni Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was founded in the 11th century by three monks who had a vision of the Virgin Mary. The monastery is famous for its mosaics, which are considered among the finest examples of the Macedonian Renaissance style.
From the monastery we will drive to the village of Lithi, where you can enjoy a relaxing lunch at one of the taverns by the beach. Lithi is known for its fresh fish and its scenic views of the Aegean Sea.
After lunch we drive to the north of the island, where you can explore some of the less touristy villages and natural attractions. We will visit Anavatos, a ghost village that was abandoned after a massacre by the Ottomans in the 19th century and enjoy the view from the Windmills of Chios, a group of 11 stone windmills that date back to the 16th century and are located on a hill overlooking the sea. Early evening we take the ferryboat back to Çeşme.
